Our front yard xeriscape project began in earnest three years ago (1995), but we had been contemplating a new landscape ever since we moved into our home in 1993. Mary Clayton, our former neighbor and an avid gardener, began xeriscaping her front yard last year (1997).

Mary, Jill Hartman, and I (Mike Kruchoski) hope you enjoy this Internet tour of our xeriscape gardens and these other sites around the city. Our special thanks to Doug Bennett of the City of Albuquerque Public Works Department and Penny Genter of Rowland Nursery for helping us share this with you.

1995 – the "Year of Dirt": Our front yard the summer we started removing soil and concrete to begin terracing. The front lawn was originally a mixture of  Bermuda, crabgrass, and bluegrass. It was quite ugly -- and a water guzzler, to boot!

Spring 1998: The view of the completed terraces. We used broken concrete to build some of the retaining walls. Flowers begin blooming in April;  we think that f May and June are the most scenic. See page 5 for a look at the yard in early summer.
