Less than 15 minutes and a quarter mile from the tram, we're already in the wilderness area. Our first overlook affords us a magnificent view of our destination: South Sandia Peak, approximately six
miles away "as the crow flies" but probably more like eight miles by foot. The elevation drop has been modest to this point — at most 200 feet — but we will drop quickly after this, as we pass
through thick stands of fir and aspen.
