Unlike much of the early hike, the trail finally opens into level ground that would make a splendid camp site. It's debatable how to best reach this area for an overnight trip. We recommend
access from the Cole Spring picnic area near Canoncito (north on Hwy. 14 from I-40). Bart's trail will climb 1,800 feet over 1.8 miles on the east slope, but once reaching the Crest trail, the
elevation gain is only 200 feet. Crowds? Don't expect any! We hadn't seen anyone for the past three hours.
